I started floating as a form of self-care in the middle of being everything to everyone. I am a childcare provider by day, hair braider evening and weekends and a mom 24/7. My brain is always moving. ADHD noise, anxiety, planning the next appointment, the next event, the next responsibility. My nervous system rarely gets quiet.
Floating has a big impact on receiving that quietness for my nervous system.
I go about once a month, and for that hour, it feels like my body gets a gentle exhale. No phone. No noise. No expectations. Just stillness. The first time I floated, I didn’t realize how tense I actually was until I felt my shoulders drop and my jaw unclench. My mind slowed down in a way that’s hard to explain unless you’ve experienced it.
As a braider, I carry tension in my hands, wrists, shoulders, and whole body for that matter haha. Floating gives my body a reset. It’s not magic after one session, consistency matters. But over time, I’ve noticed I recover faster from busy weeks and feel more grounded and less reactive.
Now, let’s talk hair, because that was my biggest hesitation.
I have 3B–3C textured hair. I’ve floated with my hair in braids, and now in locs. In the beginning, I was skeptical about that much Epsom salt sitting in my hair for an hour. I wondered if it would dry it out or affect my scalp. What I realized is that it simply meant I needed to be intentional afterward and give it some extra love.
A thorough wash is key. I make sure to properly cleanse my scalp, remove any salt residue, and follow up with deep moisture. Protecting my hair from dryness. Understanding my hair porosity and using the right products to seal in hydration. Once I built that into my routine, it was no longer a concern.
Floating isn’t just physical relief for me, it’s mental clarity. When you’re constantly giving to others, you forget what it feels like to just exist without stimulation. Floating gives me that space.
If you’re someone who carries stress in your body, lives with anxiety, or just needs quiet, I suggest giving it a try. Just go in informed, especially with textured hair. Care for your crown afterward the same way you care for your mind and body.
For me, floating isn’t a luxury. It’s maintenance. It helps me stay balanced, present, and able to keep showing up fully, for my family, my clients, and MYSELF.
