I love the body.
I have been fascinated with the body ever since realizing I had the power to make mine feel better.
I wasn’t a particularly athletic, or health-conscious kid. Up until my early twenties, I was known as the person in my group of friends who ate the worst, and exercised the least (like none).
But after some gentle persuasion from my brother, I started going to the university gym. Despite the initial unrelenting self-consciousness (and one very embarrassing, and very public pants-splitting-incident), it wasn’t long before I was hooked!
I loved it. I loved getting stronger. It was the first time in my life ever feeling strong, and it meant a lot. I loved going in and following a plan and watching myself get better and better. I felt proud of the commitment I made to myself, and this pride trickled into all aspects of my life.
With this, I began studying everything I could get my hands on related to health and the body. I became borderline-obsessed; anatomy, physiology, biomechanics. I couldn’t get enough. (I still can’t).
Before applying for physio, I worked for three and a half years as a personal trainer. I loved that job.
Although it had its challenges (as all jobs do), mostly it was just this wonderful thing I got to do with my time – helping people take their health into their hands. Coaching them and guiding them, but all the while with this mutual understanding that it was them doing the work.
And this is what I try to do as a physio – to coach people to take their health into their own hands. To teach them what to do to build a more resilient body, and to learn to do this themselves, independently, forever.
Exercise (and this can mean a lot of different things) has been a beautiful gift in my life. It has provided me with such a sense of pride and independence. It has helped me through many big life-issues, and has made me a more resilient person in every way. Sharing this with other people is my driving force, and I am so happy to be able to do this here, basking in the wonderfulness of Halifax, and surrounded by the lovely people at The Floatation Centre.
Maggie is available at The Floatation Centre on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays – Sundays. Her incredible physiotherapy services are covered by most extended health plans AND we direct bill. Book online or call for an appointment: 902-453-5628
